"HiraKakuPro-W3", "Hiragino Kaku Gothic Pro W3", "Hiragino Kaku Gothic Pro", "ヒラギノ角ゴ Pro W3",

"TakaoExGothic", "Takao Gothic",
"Lucida Grande", "Lucida Sans Unicode", "Lucida Sans", "DejaVu Sans", Verdana, sans-serif;

Hiragino Kaku Gothic Pro W3

This is a font of great importance in Japanese Typography. If you have access to any kind of Apple product (MacOS X, iOS/iPhone/iPad) you should already have this font. If not, it's important enough that you should expend a great effort to find a copy of it somewhere. The Hiragino fonts have a rich feature set and there is an interesting history behind them. We can't reccomend this font highly enough. If you don't have it, you are missing out.

Kozuka Gothic Pro

This font is similar in some ways to Hiragino, but is different enough that we reccomend you still try to find the Hiragino fonts if you can. Kozuka Gothic comes with most Adobe products and is also available for free in the Acrobat Reader Asian Fonts Pack. Heisei Kaku Gothic is also included here because it is the Japanese font used by Adobe prior to Kozuka Gothic.

Meiryo was chosen as a fallback over Takao because it is widely available and for it's praised Latin forms. If you don't have Hiragino or Kozuka installed you probably have Meiryo. It was created for Windows Vista and comes standard with most Microsoft products since 2008.

One of the best free alternatives is Takao. TakaoExGothic is free and is based on TypeBank Gothic.

Speaking of TypeBank, you may wish to investigate the following fonts:

The TypeBank fonts are the best you can find anywhere, but you need an individual license (they don't come bundled with any software).

If you'd like help selecting a good Japanese font, send us an e-mail! We'd be glad to point you in the right direction.

Q. Furigana (Ruby) characters are not showing properly. How do I fix this?
A. If you are using firefox, you need to enable Ruby support. This can be done with an addon. There are quite a few different addons that work well. You can search for addons on the Firefox Addons page. One popular add-on for Ruby characters is HTML Ruby 6.22.3.
